PS12: Implements appropriate hygiene and nutrition procedures and practices, and models the skills essential to healthy choice making

Evidence 1:  Growing Foods Lesson

Description:  This lesson helps children understand the difference between junk foods and growing foods.

Analysis:  Knowing at the Kindergarten level that a teacher will no longer be sitting at the table with the preschoolers in my care, I feel it important to teach them about the types of foods that will help their body to grow and to have the most energy.  After teaching this lesson, I am able to extend the concept even further by helping my students to examine the foods in their lunch boxes and determine which foods would be most beneficial.  We also have a classroom guideline that children have to eat two growing foods before a junk food.

Evidence 2:  Color Me Healthy Morning Meeting Activity

Description:  Children participate in this activity during Morning Meeting once or twice per month.

Analysis:  This activity allows children to share their knowledge of healthy foods and colors as they complete the song.  As an extension to this activity we begin discussing the food pyramid and the different classifications of food.  Children learn about healthy foods and eating habits.

Evidence 3:  Hand Washing Flyer

Description:  This flyer hangs in the bathroom at school to remind children how to properly wash their hands.

Analysis:  Controlling germs seems to be a never ending battle, but one way in which I teach children to combat it is through the practice of proper hand washing.  Although this flyer was created by the state of Vermont for those facilities making and selling food, I hang it in our classroom bathroom because it clearly depicts the steps required to ensure proper hand washing.
