PSSS4: Provides opportunities for children to explore and use historical, geographical, and social science tools and methods
Evidence 1: Photographs of Apple Picking
Description: These photographs were taken at a local apple orchard while on a field trip.
Analysis: There are many apple orchards in our area. The preschoolers enjoy learning about how a tiny apple seed can grow into a big tree that apples grow on. They are also interested in learning about the various types of apples and how they look and taste. We are also able to learn about how apples can be turned into cider and donuts. When we return to school with our freshly picked apples, we also learn about how apples can become apple sauce, pie and bread. We also build a farm stand when we return to school to further our knowledge through play.
Evidence 2:Photographs of Hiking
Description: The preschoolers and their third and fourth grade buddies went hiking at the Robert Frost Trail as an end of the year celebration.
Analysis: The Robert Frost Trail is a wonderful place to explore. There are many types of plants, trees and creatures. It is also a great spot for young children to explore and take leadership over activities that they are participating in. Along the trail there are various spots for children to make decisions concerning which way the group will go. Children are able to use discussion tools and problem solving skills that they have learned throughout the course of the year to come to a group consensus. We also stop to read a few of the poems, which tie into learning occurring in the third and fourth grade classrooms.
Evidence 3: Photograph of Caroling
Description: Children from school are invited to Hannaford's Supermarket to sing Christmas Carols each year.
Analysis: During the Christmas season we enjoy being able to share our faith with others as we volunteer our service and our voices at these various locations. As children participate, they learn about helping others feel joy, which in turn helps them to feel a sense of accomplishment. We are also able to share the mission of our school with others and develop a greater ownership over our part within our school community.
