PSELA3c: Uses instructional strategies to build or strengthen fluency
Evidence 1: Fluency Book List
Description: These books are currently available in our classroom, and contain repetitive phrases that aid children in building and strengthening fluency.
Analysis: Fluent reading involves quick and accurate word recognition which includes a component of comprehension because students cannot properly phrase text if they don't understand what they are reading. Fluency is built through repeated reading of a familiar text. Books that contain repetitive phrases, aid children in building this fluency.
Evidence 2: Words to Favorite Song
Description: The preschoolers are learning this song for our Christmas Concert. We sing it each day during Morning Meeting. Children have begun singing this song while they are playing in various areas of the classroom.
Analysis: Repetition helps to build fluency. Through singing favorite songs over and over again, children learn lyrics, melody and rhythm. This too, aids in building fluency.
Evidence 3: Transcript of J Reading
Description: This is a transcript of a four year old reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?".
Analysis: Through pictures and repetition, J has become a successful reader of "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" She is able to recognize which words belong on each page, and is able to produce the appropriate phrasing to make this story understandable to all who listen to her read it.
