Implements strategies to include parents as partners in their children's literacy development
Evidence 1: Email
Greetings Preschool Families,
Exposing and encouraging children to love books and reading is a very important job for parents and educators. Beginning on Thursday, October 16th and Friday, October 17th I will begin sending literacy bags home with each preschooler. Each bag contains a book and activity for the preschooler to complete with a parent, grandparent or older sibling. Bags will be sent home weekly on Thursdays and Fridays and should be returned to the preschool by Tuesdays and Wednesdays of the following week. My hope is that we will complete two 11 week cycles throughout the course of the school year.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thanks so much! Your children are all really excited for their "homework"!
Description: This email introduces literacy bags to families.
Analysis: Our classroom should be an extension of learning that is occurring at home. Unfortunately due to circumstances that are beyond the control of families, that isn't always the case. One way that I can help to increase literacy rich environments both at home and at school is to send children home with a literacy bag each week. Each bag contains a book, materials for an activity and a sheet describing the activity. The preschoolers enjoy having "homework", and parents appreciate the opportunity to build further connections between home and school.
Evidence 2: Book Order Letter
Description: This letter introduces families to ordering books from the Scholastic Book Order
Analysis: Another way in which I encourage parents to participate in their child's literacy development is by increasing their home libraries. I send home monthly book orders and usually add my Teacher Picks to highlight the books and materials that coincide with activities happening in the classroom and are of a higher quality.
Evidence 3: Imagination Library
Description: Addison County Reader's supplies brochures for each family to receive free books in the mail each month. I share them with families to help build their homelibraries.
Analysis: Each year we receive brochures from Addison County Reader's promoting Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. For no cost all of our preschool families living in Addison County can arrange for their children to receive free quality books each month until their fifth birthday. Families are able to build a library for their child with high-quality books that will encourage reading at home.
