KS9: Health and safety issues, including procedures regarding disease and accident prevention, hygiene, and first aid; the signs of emotional stress, harassment, child abuse, and neglect in young children; and state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to early childhood educators and programs

Evidence 1:  Healthy and Safe Environments Workshop, Professional Development Documentation, September 2013

Description:  Members from VT’s Licensing Team will answer your questions regarding licensing regulations and discuss ways to provide safe and healthy environments for children.

Analysis:  In this workshop I was reminded that the Early Childhood Program Licensing Regulations were developed for the safety of not only the children within a program, but for the staff as well.  Regularly checking classroom materials and play structures, as well as practicing safety drills helps to prepare staff and children.  Also, per state guidelines, all child abuse needs to be reported to the proper authorities and in the proper manner.  It is also my responsibility to report any suspected cases of child abuse as well.

Evidence 2: Child Abuse and Neglect, PSY 1020, Community College of Vermont, Spring 2004, Transcript

Description:  Introduction to issues of child abuse and neglect. Topics include historical and cultural context, identification, protective services, treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect. Especially helpful to workers and parents who deal with children in daycare or human service settings.

Analysis:  In this class, students learned that abuse can be exhibited in many ways, including physically, emotionally,  and psychologically.  We learned that abuse generally occurs in cycles (generation to generation) and about the risk factors that are associated with this cycle.  Breaking free of this cycle is difficult, but can be done.  We also learned about the signs or red flags that can indicate abuse or neglect.

Evidence 3:  CPR/First Aid Certification

Description:  This is a yearly certification covering infant, child and adult CPR, as well as basic first aid skills.

Analysis:  As I take this course each year, I am always reminded of the importance of accident prevention.  By thoroughly inspecting the indoor and outdoor spaces, and making sure that outlets are covered, materials are in good shape, floor boards or steps aren't loose, and that items being used are of appropriate size and shape, I can reduce the risk of injury occurring and help to prevent accidents.

Evidence 4: Early Childhood Program Licensing Regulations

Description:  This manual provides information on reporting child abuse, proper procedures for hand washing, dish washing and toileting small children, inclusion and exclusion practices for children within care, and many other health and safety concerns.

Analysis:  Having a copy of the licensing regulations within my classroom space where parents and teachers can access it regularly helps to maintain a safe environment for children and adults to learn.  Whenever a parent, another teacher or I have a question regarding the program we can reference the licensing regulations.
