KS8: The importance of physical and psychological environments on young children's growth and development and ways to organize learning environments and orchestrate interactions in order to promote young children's holistic development

Evidence 1:  Vermont Early Learning Standards

Description: The Vermont Early Learning Standards were created to provide guidance for families, teachers and administrators.  The VELS describe guiding principles that serve as the core for making informed decisions about what is developmentally appropriate for young children.

Analysis:  Environments must be designed based on the needs and developmental level of the students, and also promote competency by allowing children to function independently.  In my classroom, children's cubbies, mailboxes and coat hooks are clearly labeled and at eye level for the preschoolers.  Children's self-esteem grows as they are able to navigate the classroom on their own.

Evidence 2:  Introduction to Early Childhood Education, ECE 105, Community College of Vermont, Fall 2001, Transcript

Description:  This course was an overview of early childhood education . We examined historical, philosophical, and practical issues related to the education of children from birth to age eight. Topics included early childhood learning, behavior, and motivation; curriculum models and materials; observation techniques; and instructional issues.

Analysis:  The early childhood classroom should support the development of children.  During this course we were exposed to various early childcare classrooms, and learned about the importance of providing ample space and an ample number and variety of materials to encourage positive peer interaction.

Evidence 3:  Quote by Haim Ginott

Description:  I received this quote while attending a workshop.  It has remained with me, and I contemplate it often.

Analysis:  When the classroom environment is set up to maximize children's development and promote appropriate behaviors, the well-being of all who enter the classroom is supported.  Each child's ability to learn and grow safely, hinges on the daily decisions I make regarding the environment.
